exactAIS® Sees Significant Increase in Class B Detections

With the addition of the EV-1 satellite to our exactAIS® data product, we have seen a tremendous increase in the level of Class B vessels detected. Early analysis has shown a 30% increase in picking up the lower-powered signals aboard thousands of smaller ships worldwide. exactAIS tracking detected a significant amount of Class B vessels currently in the Atlantic and discovered that a sailing competition may explain the sudden surge in ships.

The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers recently got underway at the end of November with nearly 230 sailing boats participating in the race from Las Palmas Port in Spain to Saint Lucia in the Caribbean Sea. The majority of boats will take 18-21 days to make the 2700 nautical mile Atlantic crossing, arriving in Rodney Bay Marina in time for the prize giving on 21 December.
